5:00 The front desk calls us to tell us that our elephant will be ready at 5:30.
5:30 Our elephant is waiting for us so we quickly climb up the ramp and mount up. Our driver takes us into the forest and follows some tiger tracks he has found, but to no avail. It doesn't surprize me: between mine & Ember's cameras the animals can probably hear us from miles away. However, we do see some deer, monkeys, and a crab - but no tiger.
8:30 Breakfast - Toast, jam and fruit.
10:00 Emma rests while Ember and I hang out in the sun. We decide that it would be cool if we went on a hike, so we grab Emma and the cameras and take off.
10:30 We walk down the main road into Corbett for about two kilometers and meet so many interesting people along the way. Everybody is so friendly and so happy to see us.
Some people trying to sell us rice (no luck! - we're too cheap for that!) invite us to go down to the local temple we saw from the road on the previous day. Its a bit of a hike and it takes us across the Kosi river on a really cool bridge. When we finally get to the temple I am amazed by what I see: so many people faithfully attending their temple to worship their god. Many of these have walked without shoes and still have smiles on their faces. I smell burning incense and hear the ringing of bells. There must be at least two hundred people worshipping - some coming, some going. The temple itself is a structure made of dirt and sediment (curiously formed by the last flooding of the river) centered on a piece of land jutting out from the shore. It is like a tower and it stands approximately 75 to 100 feet high.
After the temple we turn around and head home because we are all getting very thirsty.
14:30 After lunch I walk down by the river and read about Hinduism.
I see my new friend from the resort, Bunssen, out photographing his son so
I run out to him and begin to ask him about his religion.
16:00 While talking to Bunssen, Ember calls to me from the porch to tell me that it is time for our next safari. This time around it is just the three of us with two tour guides. They drive us out of Corbett through some dirty towns along the road hoping to get us to the southwest part of the park. But, alas! The road is damaged so we can't get through. So we head back to the resort. The trip wasn't a waste though: We saw so many neat people and places along the way. They are a beautiful people. They live such simple lives. They have nothing compared to us, yet they seem to thrive. Many of them even live in dung huts. Almost everyone of them along the way greeted us with a smile. The little children are so loving. I never imagined that there were still ancient cultures untouched by time. I'm sure most of these people are completely oblivious to all of the national politics going on around them. How many of these people could even know that their country was at war with their neighboring Pakistan? How many of them even know of Pakistan? I'm somehow jealous. This day has truly opened my eyes a little wider. A part of me wants to show these people all I know and "help" them - but another, bigger, part of me tells me to leave them alone because their lives are so much richer than mine. They appear to have no concept of possession.
18:00 Arrive back at the resort. Ember and Emma rest, so I take a shower and it feels so good. I also try to wash my clothes in the shower.
19:00 Ember says she would like to go to the evening film and it sounds good to me. However, we all fall asleep before we do.
19:30 The girls are both asleep so I head to the lodge by myself. Ember joins me minutes later. The mosquitos are getting us so I head back to the room to get a blanket for her and repellant for me.
21:00 Dinner. There's not much of a selection so I try something new - this later proves to be a bad idea. Ember gets the waiter upset because she cannot decide whether or not to drink the water he offers her.
22:00 Scripture reading and prayer.
22:30 Lights out.
23:00 Uh-oh! Sick! Emma never could get the toilet flushed so I instead walk down to the lodge - no! - run down! I head back to the room but wait outside to get some fresh air. This doesn't last long because the owner's two dogs start running towards me - growling! I slip in the door just in time.
