11:30 We sleep in very late but that is okay because we've planned for a day to deal with the jet lag. Our list of "things to do" includes the following: going around the market, calling our tour guides, and finding some safe food to eat.
13:30 In the lobby of The BB Palace
We make contact with Gary
(our tour guide contact for Corbett National Park,) K.C. Sethi (our agent for
the Golden Triangle Tour,) and Miss Mini Karol (our agent for the "Romance
of the Nilgris" tour.) We agree to call Sanjeev at 15:00 to arrange an exchange
of the difference we owe him and our airline tickets.
13:45 We leave the hotel to walk the streets. We are immediately approached by a beggar woman holding a naked child that is urinating all over her arms. This is a big shocker for all of us. We've never seen such poor conditions - even in the poorest parts of our own country. Although I've been told never to give the beggars money, I break down and give her 10 rupees. We move on and we are approached by another woman in the same situation. I refuse this time but she is persistant and follows us around the block to our hotel. Emma is very spooked and drained by the old beggar woman. She and Ember lay down while I go downstairs to call Sanjeev and arrange an autorickshaw to take us to a restaurant we've found in one of our travel books.
16:00 Our hotel manager is extremely helpful with everything and especially finding us a transport at a fair price. We arrive at the Ambassador Hotel only to find that it is the "new" Ambassador Hotel and that the restaurant we are looking for is located at the "old" one. We settle for a place called "The Yellow Brick Road." We are all very happy to find that we can buy Evian bottled water. I talk the girls into buying only 13 bottles instead of the 18 they are looking for. Our bill comes to 2,055 rupees (~ USD $47.00) and I leave a tip of 300 rupees. It seems to me that we might be spending just a wee bit too much!
18:00 Find an autorickshaw back to our hotel.
18:40 After exhanging USD $200.00 to ~8,700 rupees, Sanjeev shows up to the hotel to collect the money. I give him 5,000 rupees and head back upstairs to figure our our future finances.
20:00 A younger guy at the reception desk tells me that although the banks are closed, he can still arrange for me to exchange another USD $200.00. I take the maintenance man upstairs long enough to get the air conditioning going and then I'm back down again to discuss the money matters. He asks for the USD $200.00 and I tell him that I would rather just go with him. It is probably bad of me, but I have a hard time trusting a stranger with that kind of money. He takes me all across town to some dark alley and asks me to wait while he does the exchange. His friends keep me company in the alley while he is gone - not the kind of situation I would really like to find myself in, but at this point I don't see any other way. To my surprise, he shows up with all of the money. On the way back he starts talking about ladies' tennis and tells me that Martina Hingis is his dream. I explain to him that I think she is stuck up - but still a great player. His driver takes me back to the palace. All he asks for the whole thing is that I pay for the fare, which even seemed low. I gladly pay and offer him a tip for helping me, but he refuses. I head back up to the room and Ember and I commence spraying the clothes with mosquito repellant.
22:30 After watching India MTV for awhile we decide to read
scriptures, sing a hymn, and pray.
