6:30 Wake up and check out of the Rajputana Sheraton in Jaipur. On
the way out of town Sonny takes us to his jeweler friend so that we can
pick up the jewels we ordered. We begin to question whether or not this
guy is legit. When we enter his shop he spies out the window, shuts the
blinds, and locks all of the doors. We can tell what each other is
thinking but I guess we all figured it was safe. On the way to Agra
Sonny has to stop to get his tire fixed. Just outside of Agra he
tries to get me to stop at a whore house along the way.
The girls are appalled. As we drive by I see only young girls. I
would bet that none of the girls we saw were older than fourteen.
Its so sad that in a country that respects women so much I would
see something this terrible.
We also stop by an unnamed mosque just outside the city limits of Agra. Ember and I decide to make the trip up what seems like thousands of steps to check it out. However, once up to the gate we are both so drained we decide to head back down to the car.
15:30 Our tour agent, Yandev, is waiting at the Mughal Sheraton for us. We check out the room and head straight for the pool.
17:00 Sonny offers to drive me around the town for free. This offers me my first real glimpse of the Taj Mahal. It is beautiful even from the dirt across the river I'm standing in. The Indian people affectionately refer to the Taj as "a diamond in a dust bin." He drives me past the Agra Fort, through the city streets for some shopping, and then back to the hotel.
19:30 As I return to the room I run into Ember and Emma who are walking around the hotel. They see a puppet show going on that Ember wants to see so we stop by. Afterwards we hang out in the lobby and listen to a trio playing traditional Indian music.
22:00 I try to photograph the Taj at night but they no longer light
it up at night. And, due to the monsoon, the moon is barely visible. However,
the Mughal Sheraton has the perfect observation deck for viewing the Taj.
It is just off center, plenty high up enough, and close enough to get a great
view of the Taj.
