June 25th, 2000

45 Wake up and have breakfast. The girls have already eaten.

00 The girls head down to the pool. I tell them that I will join them a little later. Meanwhile, I watch a National Geographic special while the cleaning people do their work.

00 Pool. It is very hot and humid outside. The concrete is too hot to walk on.

00 I head back to the room and take a shower. The three of us sit around for awhile and watch some kind of team power race taking place in Patagonia.

00 We catch a rickshaw to the San Thome Basilica. It is a Catholic church built sometime in the sixth century and still in use today. I am surprised at how many Christians I've seen in India. There seems to be a lot more Christians in the southern part of the country. It is very hot and muggy in the church. Still, there are many of the faithful out today. At the center of the building is a staircase descending down into a chamber containing the remains of the apostle Thomas (Doubting Thomas, that is.) Because of stories like The Shroud of Turin I tend to be just a little doubtful of many holy relics like this. It would be a great thing if this tomb really did carry the remains of one of the original twelve apostles.

45 Our driver is still waiting for us (even though we asked him not to.) We decide to have him take us to the beach. I am amazed at how many people are out to the beach today. This is great. Once again, a reality check. Here I am looking at the Bay of Bengal - something I never really ever imagined I would be looking at. Ember and I head out to the water while Emma slowly gets surrounded by locals. We have Emma take some shots of us out in the water which is really warm. While playing around in the water we meet up with a family. The girls are all beautifully dressed in matching sarees. I ask the the little one if she'll be in a photo with me. She is the cutest little thing. They are all really nice to us. After I've been in the water a little longer Ember decides to buy a kite and some seashells. As much as she loves it, it just doesn't hold up for too long. It was still a bargain for how much she paid for it. By this point Emma has half the beach crowd just standing around her so we decide that it is time to pack up and go. On the drive back to the hotel an oncoming rickshaw hits my arm. Surprisingly, it doesn't hurt me.

30 After getting some dessert and eating it in our room, we start flipping through the channels and stumble across the movie, "A River Runs Through It" on cable. I have never seen it and the girls have no objections so we set the T.V. to that station. Seems like a pretty good film.

30 "You've Got Mail" comes on. Because my skin is so irritated from playing in the Indian Ocean I finally decide to take a shower to wash off the sea water. After the shower I watch the rest of the movie from bed until I fall asleep.
