June 18th, 2000

10:00 I finally get out of bed. I can't remember the last time I slept for twelve hours straight. Ouch! I build up the nerve to head down to the pool to relax.

12:00 I shower and repack.

14:00 Sonny picks us up and takes us to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

16:00 The bus at the terminal takes us out to board the plane.

19:00 Arrive in Bangalore. We are greeted at the airport with roses. As we walk out to our car we smoothered with young men who so "politely" take our luggage to load it into the car. After they have loaded everything into the car they all ask for ten rupees each. We each give the first ones to help us some money and refuse to pay the others - in the nicest way possible, of course.

As we drive to our hotel we all notice that Bangalore is much more modern than any of the other cities we've been to. Our driver tells us that it is India's version of Silicone Valley, California. The computer- related industries are very big here in Bangalore. We see signs of some of the high tech names we recognize from home. The streets are definitely a lot cleaner. Another thing I've noticed since we've been here in India is how quickly it gets dark in the evening. We've always been at lower latitudes than Salt Lake City. And yet, around 7:00 or 7:30 it just goes straight into nighttime. It may have to do with India having it's own unique time zone. Apparently, the whole country decided they want to share the same time zone across the nation. To compensate for the country actually crossing two time zones they shifted a half of an hour between the two. Quite different and just an observation. Hmmmm. I'm still a little bummed with the thought that I may have said good-bye to the Taj Mahal forever. But, then again, I was there and how could I ask for more?

20:00 We arrive at our hotel. I immediately go to work at coaxing Ember into going out to the markets with me. It just so happens that right outside our hotel is a bazaar. They are only selling sarees (and of every type imagineable. After looking at quite a few I decide to buy one for my "petite amie" back home. Back at the hotel we spy a cafeteria and I order the tomato soup. It comes with all-you-can-eat bread sticks so Ember and I horde all that we can and then pick up some for Emma who is upstairs watching the NBA playoffs.

22:00 Bed. This place has really soft pillows. Room service always folds down the bed sheets so tightly that is next to impossible to get into. Why do they always think that is so cool to do to us? I have feet too! The girls really crank the air-conditioning at night. Brrrrr.
